Rourkela Steel Plant yestersday felicitated local boy Utkal Ranjan Sahoo for winning one silver and two bronze medals in the recently concluded Asian Youth Chess Championship at Subic (Philippines). Utkal, who was part of the Indian contingent, bagged the silver in under-16 blitz team category and the two bronzes in under-16 open and team categories.
RSP Managing Director S N Singh greeted Utkal in his office and encouraged him to keep the flag of the country flying high in the international arena by achieving greater success in the future. RSP General Managers AK Panda (Law), L Dung Dung (Personnal), MK.Das (MD Secretariat); Deputy General Manager JC Mohapatra (PR & COC) and many other senior officers of the steel plant were present on the occasion.
It is note worthy that SAIL sponsored Rs 80,000 for PK Sahoo, who is working as a senior technician in sports section of RSP, to accompany his son Utkal for the Asian Youth Championship. One of the most promising chess players of the country, Utkal is a product of the Chess Learning Centre of RSP and currently studying in class-10 of Ispat English Medium School here at Sector-20.
Utkal has won many a laurel in the past including winning two silver medals in the recently concluded World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad at Budur City, Turkey and two Gold Medals in the Asian Youth Chess Championship held at Beijing (China).
